How to jailbreak Apple iPod touch in Linux will be introduced in this article. We use Spirit to jailbreak iPod touch. Spirit[1] is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on certain firmware versions.

Please read [1] for requirement when using Spirit. Currently, the version of iTunes used should be iTune 9 earlier than 9.2. The firmware’s version should be 3.1.2, 3.1.3 or 3.2.

My iPod which I use in this tutorial is: iPod touch 8G 3.1.3(7E18) Model (MC086ZP). The Linux I used is Fedora 12.

Okay, let’s go!

1. Synchronise with iTunes

As what we usually do. This step is highly recommended by Spirit.

2. Dowload Spirit jaibreak for Linux and compile it

Get the source code

$ git clone http://github.com/posixninja/spirit-linux.git

Install depended development packages

$ sudo yum install libplist-devel libimobiledevice-devel

You may need to install other development packages such as make, gcc etc.

Build spirit

$ cd spirit-linux
$ make

3. Set iPod to not Auto-lock

In Settings->General->Auto-lock, select never.

4. Connect iPod touch to the Linux box with cable

5. jailbreak it

$ ./spirit

6. iPod will reboot

The jailbreak work will start. Wait for a few minutes.

7. Done

Congratulations! Now, look for the Cydia icon. My favourite applications are Terminal and OpenSSH. Remember to change the password of root and mobile users for security.

The software in Nokia E71 already support POP3 and IMAP email box. But we may lead to install Nokia messaging and setting up account of Nokia messaging. Storing our emails in remote servers isn’t a secure way. And why not use IMAP directly if it is supported by the system software? How to set up POP3 or IMAP email box on Nokia E71 will be introduced in this post.

First create a new mailbox by select:

Menu -> Communic. -> Messaging -> Optioins -> Settings -> E-mail -> Options -> New mailbox -> Start

Allow connection? select NO. This is the most important part. Otherwise, we will be lead to install Nokia Messaging again.

E-mail address: your email address

Password: password

User name: user name

Then you will get a message that the account can’t be defined. It will ask us for the email client:

Select POP3/IMAP in the next screen:

You will get a wizard after that:

Then just follow the wizard and you will set up a email account using POP3 or IMAP.

Firefox can be much faster on Linux! Let’s speed up Firefox on Linux system. Part 1 and 2 only config firefox, so it can also be used on other platform such as Windows.

1. Pipe-lining network connection

Most of us use a broad band width network, then why not pip line the connection from Firefox?

Type “about:config” into the address line and enter.

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining.ssl” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 25. This number means how many requests Firefox can make at most. It depends on the network. I am a crazy guy and I set it to 50 in my browser.

2. No waiting before action

Type “about:config” into the address line and enter.

Right-click on the page and select New-> Integer.
Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

3. Put cache into memory

If your memory is larger than 1GB, you can try this method. If you experience problem, please change it back. (delete browser.cache.disk.parent_directory)

Type “about:config” into the address line and enter.

Right-click on the page and select New-> String.

Name it “browser.cache.disk.parent_directory” and set its value to “/dev/shm/ffcache“. The Cache of Firefox will be putinto /dev/shm/ffcache/Cache.

4. Diable IPv6 support

If you experience very slow DNS lookup in Firefox, you can try to disable IPv6 support in Firefox and Linux if you don’t use it:

For Firefox:

Type “about:config” into the address line and enter.
Set “network.dns.disableIPv6″ to “true”

For Linux:

I test it on Fedora 12. On other systems, the configuration may be different.

# cp /etc/modprobe.d/dist.conf /tmp/dist.conf.bak0
# echo “alias net-pf-10 off” >> /etc/modprobe.d/dist.conf
# echo “alias ipv6 off” >> /etc/modprobe.d/dist.conf

Then restart you Firefox and try whether Firefox is faster and enjoy it :)

Firefox should always be ready there for us, right? Even after we closing the last tab, we would like firefox to be still open. At least I like to treat it in this way.

But unfortunately, Firefox will close after we closing the last tab as default in version 3.5. But the good news is that this behaviour is configurable through Firefox’s configuration editor. Now, let’s open it:

Type in this into the address bar and hit enter:

about:config

Firefox will warn us changing these configuration may be harmful. Okay, tell it we’ll be careful by clicking the button.

The type in this in to the filter field:

LastTab

You will find this item with name:

browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab

That’s exactly what we are looking for! Double click it to change it’s value to “false”.
Okay, that’s it. Close this tab now and try closing all the tabs by using lots of “CTRL + w”. See what? Firefox is still there open even after we closing the last tab.

I find a desktop client for publishing to WordPress blogs – lekhonee[1]. I find it interesting and easy to use. This is the first post using it.

The interface is simple, but it can provides most of the functions:
* Writing post.
* Select categories.
* Add tags.
* Load and Edit the old post.
And it can provides the convenient “Spell Check” function.

It is already in Fedora’s repository, so installing it is straight forward:

# yum install lekhonee-gnome

Before using it, first go to the Writing Settings to enable XML-RPC publishing protocol. For example, in this blog the address is: http://blog.zhiqiangma.info/wp-admin/options-writing.php

lekhonee will add a message under the post to tell the word that the post is written in lekhonee. If you find it annoying, it can be closed easily by unchecking “Edit -> lekhonee msg”.

Let’s have a try and enjoy it ;)

I usually keep Thunderbird open when my computer is open. But Thunderbird is minimized to the taskbar. It will be more convenient if it is minimized or closed to the system tray as an icon.It will be better if it can display the number of unread messages. Mozilla’s software’s addon system give the method to add more feature to the software by only installing some addons to it. The addons for minimized the windows to system tray are different on Windows and Linux.

1. Linux

My favourite addon for minimizing to tray is FireTray[1]. It works perfect under thunderbird. But it can also be added to firefox, sunbird, seamonkey 2 and songbird. It allows to set up custom icon, minimizing to tray instead of closing and display the number of unread messages. A screen shot on my laptop:

2. Windows

The addon for Thunderbird on Windows is MinimizeToTray[2]. MinimizeToTray can allow to always minimize to the tray instead of to the taskbar, minimize to tray on close and require a double click to restore from the tray.

These addons can also be used on Firefox. But usally I don’t like to make Firefox minimized to system tray. I will use Firefox for more time than Thunderbird, so Firefox should be ready there most of time ;)

It is useful sometimes to set up a sshd server on a Windows. One example is using remote forwards tunnel to pass through the firewall.

My platform is Windows XP SP3.

The sshd server is sshwindows. It can be dowloaded from here: http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/. The version I use here is 3.8p1-1 20040709.

It is really easy:

1) Run sshwindows installer and click OK and OK…

2) Run cmd.exe:

3) cd C:\Program Files\OpenSSH\bin (it depends on the sshd’s install location)

4) mkgroup -l >> ..\etc\group

5) mkpasswd -l >> ..\etc\passwd
Now all local users are added to the sshd users list. More details can be found in the readme.txt file.

6) Configuration the firewall and let it allow the sshd service listening on port 22

7) Start the sshd service: “net start “OpenSSH Server”"

Now it is OK ;) Try to ssh to the windows and have fun.

There are some problems such as the default home is “/home/USERNAME”, but you just get a warning and you can change to the directory by yourself. At least, it works.
